Partial Lunar Eclipse @ Bangalore - 07 Sept 2006

An eclipse refers to the phenomenon of one body passing into the shadow cast by another body. In astronomy, the best-known type of eclipse occurs whenever the Sun, Earth and Moon line up exactly. If this occurrence is at the time of a full moon where the Moon passes through the Earth’s shadow, it is called a lunar eclipse.

In Hindu mythology, the two demons Rahu and Ketu were believed to be the cause of eclipses. However Aryabhata gave an accurate explanation of the eclipse in his scientific treatise Aryabhatiya dated 499 AD.

Above photo shows a partial lunar eclipse which was visible in India on September 7. each photo shows the progressive lunar eclipse. The eclipse started at 11.35 p.m. and continued till 1.07 a.m.

The next lunar eclipse will be a total one on March 3/4, 2007.
